The Knowledge Tree Preschool follows the Randolph Public School calendar. Holidays and snow days will coincide with the Randolph Public School system.
There are two options to your child's school day. Children can either attend our half day program from 9AM- 12PM, or our extended day program option from 8AM-2:30PM. Children enrolled in our extended day program also have the option of an early morning drop off @ 7:30AM for an additional $5.00 fee.
The first three hours a your child's school day will be used entirely for classroom instruction. The afternoon session is considered to be a "stay and play." Children will have lunch, a rest period, and opportunity for free play and additional reinforcement of the curriculum.
Families whose children participate in our half day program also have the option of attending our “lunch bunch” program from 12PM-1PM. The cost of this optional program is $5.00 per day.
Arrivals and Dismissal
Children who arrive for early morning drop off will have the opportunity for breakfast and free play. The Knowledge Tree Preschool School day will begin promptly at 9:00A.M. We ask that parents/guardians arrive on time so that we can begin our day. Additionally, the school day ends at 12:00P.M. (Or 2:30 P.M. if your child is staying for extended day). We kindly request that children are picked up on time. If for some reason, a parent is unable to pick their child up on time, it is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school and/or to make appropriate arrangements for their child’s dismissal as specified on their emergency contact card.
We understand that tardiness sometimes can not be helped and trust that parents will not abuse the school’s policy regarding this issue. If for some reason, tardiness continues to be a problem, the parent will be spoken to once and if the issue is not resolved, it is up to the school’s discretion as to whether or not to proceed with termination of the student.
School Calendar Year
The Knowledge Tree Preschool follows the Randolph Public School Calendar. Every family will be provided with a calendar in August for the upcoming school year.
Attendance/Health
To get the most of your child’s learning experience, it is important for children to attend regularly. If for some reason your child can not attend, please call the school. Please notify the school if your child has been exposed to a communicable disease. No medications will be administered at school, with the exception of an Epi-Pen under a pediatrician’s guidance. Please keep your child home if:
they have not been fever free for at least 24 hours,
they have a discolored nasal discharge-unless medical clearance has been given by child’s pediatrician,
uncontrollable cough that interferes with daily routine
rash
upset stomach or diarrhea
or for any other reason does not feel well enough to attend school for the day
All health forms and shots must be up to date as required by the State. These include:
Record of physical exam, including lead screening (good for 1 calendar year)
3 doses Hep B
4 doses DPT
3 doses Polio
4 doses Hib
MMR
Chicken Pox (Varicella)
Evidence of Lead Test
A First Aid Kit is available in the office. First Aid will be administered by member of our staff. All staff is both CPR and First Aid certified. First Aid will consist of first cleaning the area, applying band aids, applying cold pac. If Ipecac is administered, Poison Control will be contacted first.
In the event that your child becomes ill at school, the school’s policy will be to first notify the parent/guardian at the contact numbers listed in your child’s file. In the event that the parent/guardian can not be reached, the school will begin to notify the emergency contacts provided the parent/guardian. In the meantime the child will be separated from the other students and supervised by a teacher until parent arrives.
In the event of an emergency, we will contact 911 and your child will be transported to the nearest hospital. A member of the staff will remain with your child at all times until the parent/guardian arrives.
Administration of medication
The Knowledge Tree Preschool will not administer any medications while your child is at preschool, with the exception the use of the Epi-pen (with a physician’s note) in cases of emergency. During hot weather, the parent/guardian is responsible for applying appropriate sunscreen and/or insect repellent on their child prior to coming to school.
If there is a special medical situation that requires our attention during normal preschool hours, we would be more than happy to discuss this situation with our health care consultant to see if we can meet that need.
Inclement Weather
In the case of inclement weather, when Randolph Public Schools report that they are not open, The Knowledge Tree Preschool will be closed as well. Please listen to WBZ News Radio, CBS Channel 4 or visit WBZ’s website www.wbz.com.
Clothing
Children will come to school ready to play. It is suggested that children wear comfortable play clothes and shoes that are appropriate for the weather. Please send children in with a spare change of clothes at the beginning of the year that will be kept in their cubbies for emergencies. All children’s backpacks, clothing, and lunch boxes should be labeled.
Toileting
We at the Knowledge Tree Preschool acknowledge that each child meets his/her developmental milestones when they are ready. Although it is not necessary to be fully potty trained before enrolling in school, we do anticipate that your child will come to school with some self-help skills that will enable him/her to initiate readiness in this area. We will follow a daily bathroom schedule to further encourage your child’s independence in using the toilet. In the event that your child has an accident or needs to be changed, there will be a separate area for diapering and changing of your child. It is the parents/guardians responsibility to provide the school with necessary diapers/pull-ups.
Rest
In accordance with the Department of Early Education and Care, we are required to set aside a portion of the day for quiet time so that children can rest. Children are not required to sleep and may use this time to engage in a quiet activity such as reading. If your child is staying for the extended day program, a small sheet or blanket is needed for rest time.
Snacks and Food
On the days your child attends school you will need to provide a SMALL nutritious snack and drink. If your child is signed up to attend the lunch bunch session or extended day a separate lunch and drink will be needed. Families whose children attend our early morning program will also have the option of sending in a portable breakfast to school for your child.
Children staying for the extended day program are encouraged to bring an extra snack for the afternoon.
At our orientation in September, we will send home a list of suggested snack ideas and note whether certain food or products are not allowed due to allergies.
Birthdays/parties
Birthdays are a special time for children! They will be celebrated in our class through song. You are most welcome to send in a treat- (edible or material) for the class. Your child’s teacher will confirm the date and the correct number of children attending that day. Please try to be aware of allergies when baking for school and label all ingredients. However, it is not necessary to send in treats. We will honor your child’s day nonetheless. All summer birthdays will be celebrated in June. Please do not send party invitations to school to be distributed. Children at this age can easily have hurt feelings if they are excluded.
Toys
Please do not send your child to school with any toys from home because they may be lost, broken or hard for them to share. There are plenty of toys available to them within their classroom. The only time a toy would be allowed is when it brought in for our weekly themed show and tell.
Driveway Traffic
Please follow the flow of traffic by entering through the Seton Way entrance and following the driveway around to the back of the building. All visitors must exit through the cemetery.
Parental Rights and Responsibilities
Safety
Once school hours are in session all doors are kept locked for the safety of your children. After school is in session, a member of our staff would come to the door to greet you and help you with your inquiry.
Release of Students
Children will only be released to parents or those persons listed on the emergency card (must be over 18 years of age). Other persons picking up a child from preschool must present written permission. For your child's safety, there will be no exceptions to these rules. If you have special circumstances that affect the release of your child, please note them on the emergency card.
Emergency Information
Emergency information will enable the school to proceed efficiently in case of illness, accident or emergency. Please help us keep records current so that we may reach you quickly. Any change of address, telephone, parents' work, physician or name of person designated to pick up your ill or injured child, should be reported to The Knowledge Tree immediately.
Parent Volunteers
We welcome parent\guardian\grandparent volunteers in the classroom. Although we do welcome parents/guardians in the classroom, please be aware that younger siblings can be disruptive and can also distract from the excitement that your child feels in sharing his/her school environment to you.
Permission for use of Photography
A consent form will be sent home to parents before the beginning of the school year giving the Knowledge Tree permission to videotape, photograph or use publications of your child and the other children of our program as a way of enhancing the curriculum and/or for promotional purposes of the school.
Our role as mandated reporters
As teachers, we are entrusted in the care, supervision, and safety of your child. We are also mandated reporters and are required by law to report any circumstance where we suspect that a child may have been abused or neglected to the appropriate authorities, which in the Commonwealth is the Department of Social Services.
School/Home Communication
Because ongoing parent communication is such an important component of our program, we want you to know that if at any time you want to meet in person with your child’s teachers, please see us to set up an appointment. Other appropriate ways to communicate with us is through email, telephone or notes in backpacks, with your concerns, questions or feed back.
Orientation
An orientation for parents will be held in early September before the start of the school year. The orientation will include topics such as program philosophy, goals and objectives, daily classroom agenda, school calendar, drop off/pick up procedures, suggested dress and healthy foods snack list, and techniques to help ease the transition to school. During the orientation, parents will be offered the choice of whether they would like to receive the school’s monthly newsletter via email/website or in hand. Lastly, with a family’s permission, your child can be included in our classroom address book to be distributed by our staff for your convenience.
Mid-year there will also be a pot-luck dinner to give parents the opportunity to view their children’s classroom and work and have a time to mingle with other parents in a social setting.
Parent/teacher conference
Parent conferences are held twice a year (Nov., and May). The purpose of the conference is twofold: 1) EEC does require that we evaluate and record such information as part of their licensing process; and 2) to give you a general description of your child’s development and behavior while here at school. A full report will be provided to you indicating your child’s strengths and any developmental areas that need attention will also be addressed during the conference. The report will provide us with the opportunity to monitor your child’s future developmental progress in order to plan curriculum according to his/her developmental needs.
Student records
All of your child’s records are privileged and confidential. Staff may not release any information in your child’s records to anyone without your written consent. You will be notified if your child’s records were legally subpoenaed. You are able to have access to your child’s entire records at no cost to you. The Knowledge Tree Preschool must provide you access within two business days, unless they have permission to take longer. We will provide a written log which identifies anyone who has had access including any of our staff who maintains the school’s records.
You have the right to add information, comments, data or any other relevant materials to your child’s records. If you choose to request to amend or delete any information in your child’s records you must comply with the following procedure. 1) If you are of the opinion that adding information is not sufficient to explain, clarify or correct objectionable material in your child’s record, you have the right to have a conference with the licensee to make objection known; 2) The licensee shall, within one week after conference, give you a decision in writing stating the reason or reasons for the decision. If the decision is in your favor, all necessary steps will immediately be put into effect to update the records.
Transfer of student records
If your child is no longer enrolled in our program and if you wanted to transfer your child’s records, you would have to give the request to us in writing and sign our schools record log indicting that your child records are released to the assigned parent/guardian or that you have given us your permission to transfer them to any other person that you have identified.
Social Services Referral
The Knowledge Tree Preschool recognizes that every child comes to school with a different skill set and readiness to learn. If for any reason during the course of our involvement with your child, we suspect that there may be a need that we have been unable to meet, we will determine whether or not a social services referral is warranted to help identify outside resources to better service your child and family.
Our protocol would be to first document the need and how it presents itself in the learning environment. After documenting the need, we would consult as a team to ensure that there is a shared concern around the issue. Within one week of our team consultation, we will have notified the parent/guardian and have set up a meeting to provide documentation and a forum for discussing the concerns. At the conclusion of the meeting, The Knowledge Tree Preschool will help to facilitate the referral process so that your child can be most effectively served.
Termination
The following issues may lead to grounds of termination:
Inability to make arrangements with treasurer to bring tuition balance up to date
Despite numerous attempts to address the issue, child is habitually picked up late
The school has on-going documentation regarding a child’s behavior which is of a danger to himself or others and not be safely controlled in the classroom
Incomplete social/developmental and medical documentation needed for enrollment in the program.
Contributions
To further enrich the curriculum, the Knowledge Tree Preschool kindly is always appreciative of any monetary donation which will be used towards our science and cooking program. In addition, please see attached “wish list” of items that you may volunteer to contribute to our classroom.
